What?! WE Saved 35,688 Pieces of Plastic in 2024

28 April 2025 0 Comments

Imagine a pile of 35,688 plastic bottles. Now imagine it disappearing. In 2024, our community made that happen — saving over 35,000 pieces of plastic from heading to landfill. That’s huge! And we’re not stopping there.

Why Refill?

🥳 In 2024 we SAVED 35,688 pieces of plastic going to landfill!!! We hope to see this organically increase this year, slowly making our way to 40,000. As 8 million pieces of plastic plastic enter our ocean everyday it’s amazing to be part of a community taking the steps to change the system (Surfers Against Sewage). We have some radical customers who are boycotting supermarkets this year, and equally bold customers taking the time to always purchase their washing up liquid from us. It all starts to paint a picture of how we can remove plastic from our system. One person choosing a refill bottle might feel like a drop in the ocean — but it’s these drops that form a wave. When you refill just one bottle, you’re taking a stand against the throwaway culture. Multiply that by a community, and we start to shift the tide. You are not alone — you are part of a growing movement.

Surfers Against Sewage have been fighting plastic pollution for years fishing out facts such as 1 in 3 fish we now catch for human consumption contains plastic. We hear facts like this that shock us to the core, but changing our habits is hard and how does our tiny impact help to change the bigger picture. How do we take on the mega fossil fuel giants?

The Problem with Plastic

Well as Green Peace’s article neatly explains when we put our plastic out for recycling, only 10% actually get recycled the rest ends up dumped in other countries in incinerators causing air pollution, noise, smells, litter and traffic, which often happen to be placed in areas of people on low income or with more people of colour. Want to learn more? Check out GreenPeace’s Article What really happens to your plastic recycling?

Thanks to a whole supply chain of people advocating for a healthier people and planet all the way from growers through to consumers, we are seeing a wake up call for a much needed change to our food system.
